Is the GWM Tank 500 hybrid seven-seater 4WD the family SUV that could topple the Toyota Prado?

The value helps it make a strong argument, with this large SUV (not far off a 300 Series!) starting from just AUD $66,490 drive-away, and it comes as standard with 4x4 underpinnings, low-range, 3000kg towing, and a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain.

The hybrid engine system in the Tank 500 range is more about power assistance than fuel economy, but as you'll see in my review, the drivetrain works pretty well in a mix of situations, including off-road and on-road driving.

There are 3 rows of seating, and a decent size boot capacity in five-seat layout, not to mention a number of terrific amenities for family SUV buyers.

If you're thinking about a Toyota Prado, Ford Everest, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Toyota Fortuner, Ssangyong Rexton, LDV D90 or any other off-road 4x4 SUV, this should be on your list to check out. It's very impressive. But not perfect...
