Coming up next an artist who changed everything. He grew up with aspergers. He was lonely and misunderstood but found solace in the writings of science fiction..he wrote this song as a teenager on an out of tune piano about a robot prostitute.. It ended up selling a million copies and going to #1 and no one knew what the song was really about. Up next in our interview this artist tells us the story.

I’m excited to bring you another episode from our series Revelations- where featured artists go deep on their greatest songs. I’m excited to share an interview I did with a man rearranged the sound of mainstream radio in the late 70s into the 80s with a song that he wrote about a robot prostitute… Gary Numan kicked down the door musical conventionalism when he arrived on the scene in the late 70s. a master of a technology that was part of the coming new wave explosion Gary Numan actually stumbled on synthesizers by accident. While intending to record a punk album, he noticed a Minimoog synthesizer that had been left in the studio

He would write most of his early songs about being alone and being mostly misunderstood by the strange worlds around him.. He says as a teen he’d been sent to a child psychiatrist and put on medication. He has lived with Asperger’s and explains that he saw the world differently. He was obsessed with the writings of sci-fi masters Phillip K. Dick and JG Ballard… He wrote about what he imagined London would be like in 30 years time and thought that machines would take over… Androids,,, robots. So he wrote this robot song as part of his band Tubeway army on an out of tune piano and the song was eerie to say the least. It was about robots who he called friends. these friends would come to neighbors homes to provide services… Some good, some bad. the song was about a robot prostitute.. He would call it are Friend Electric. It would blow up British radio and open the door for his global hit cars… Up next Gary Numan tells us the story of this #1 hit and the period in which he led the troops in the second British invasion.

He’s truly one of the most interesting people I’ve interviewed… There were certain points that I though he might be an android. Ha ha. HE’S SO COOL.

As we go into this interview I want thank our Sponsor Zenni Eyewear. Zenni. the glasses I always wear. Zenni really lives up to their slogan. Eyewear for everyone.
