It’s time to start this project. Today I begin to dig into this little Jon boat. This is the beginning of the demolition work. This part of a project can be a lot of fun but as it’s kinda just breaking thing and tearing things apart… something I’m kinda good at. As I begin dismantling this boat my brain is hard at work imagining how I’m going to rebuild it and the fun my kids and I will have on it.

Meet the boat that started it all. Back in 1998 I bought my first boat. It was a 1982 Glasstream 14’ Jon Boat. I would have never thought back then that that little boat would lead to a life time passion and love for the water, but it truly was truly the seed that brought me to where I am today. These little jon boats are super popular on inland lakes. Many people do a jon boat to bass boat conversion by adding a plywood front deck and back deck and in fact I did just that to this boat way back in the day. I would fish it like this on the lakes of Pennsylvania for bass with my buddies. That was later removed and it was returned to more of a regular jon boat by my brother and would run the rivers of Connecticut on it fishing for strippers. Later it was stripped again and rigged out to use for Alligator hunting here in Florida by my brother in law.

My goal with this little Jon boat now is to keep it simple and to build it out for the flats and inland waters of South Florida. It has been used and abused for many years just like a little boat like this should be but it’s time for a restore. Follow along as I chop up this Jon boat and make rebuild it not to her former glory but into something even better.
Hope you enjoy this series. If so please consider subscribing and sharing with those you think might enjoy it as well.

Thanks,
Tim
