Day 5 of main house underground plumbing. We are leveling out the main drain line for the kitchen sink and coffee bar sink. The riser coming up vertically on a long sweep 90 degree joint is a 3 inch diameter line that will tie into the loft bathroom. The riser is positioned so it comes up within the outer wall of the pantry and it will be buried in the wall. We will pack mineral wool insulation around the riser pipe to muffle any sounds from water. The wall there is a 2x6 which gives you 5.5 inches of width. So we can wrap an inch or so of mineral wool around the pipe at the thinnest part. The pantry door will be on one side and the refrigerator on the other side. This will further deaden any sound coming from the pipe. Next we secured the schedule 80 protective pipe. The PVC pipe protects the ABS drain pipe from making contact with the concrete when it is being poured and later once it sets up. The concern is that with the concrete being in contact with the ABS pipe is it could cause a leak. As the ABS pipe expands and contracts with hot and cold water going through it, if it was in contact with the concrete it could eventually develop a hole or fissure. So the drain pipe is “wrapped” and protected by the heavier duty PVC 6 inch pipe. We also put expanding foam in the ends of the 6 inch pipe to fill in any spaces so concrete could not seep in there during the concrete pour later on. In the background we are filling in the drain pipes in the laundry room and downstairs bathroom with sand to protect it. Similarly you see us pouring sand around the main drain line.
