โ€œSalvatore Lucania, later changing his name to Charles โ€œLuckyโ€ Lucaino, was born in the outskirts of Palermo, Sicily. However his family migrated to the US in 1907. From a very young age, Luchaino was extremely ambitious at the same time, having no interest in remaining on the straight and narrow, he entered the world of crime. Soon he had climbed his way up the ranks, until eventually becoming the godfather of organized crime. Forming the โ€œcommissionโ€, a committee that comprised the five major New York mafia families, that was to set out the rules everyone was to comply with, oversee all the criminal activity nationwide, and mediate any potential conflicts between the families, in a โ€œcivilizedโ€ manner. With this Lucky became one of the most powerful men in the country. But in 1936, his luck ran out, and was caught and sentenced to up to 50 years in prison. And given how treacherous the criminal underworld is, his grip on power started to loosen. This seemed like the end of the road for Luciano. His fate was to rot in prison for the rest of his life. But soon an opportunity would present itself. Lucky was one of the main inspirations behind the characters Michael and Vito Corleone. But his influence stretched across the country, buying out Hollywood movie studios, movie theatre chains, and music companies. Let alone a hotel and resort in Florida, in addition to investing in some Las Vegas Casinos. At his height, perhaps the golden era of the mob, Don Corleone generated around $650 million across his various businesses during prohibition. Now this, you won't believe.
If we convert that figure into today's money, it would be worth a staggering, $15 billion in total revenue. Then let's say after all the expenses the don only keeps 30% profit, that comes down to $4.5 billion, itโ€™s still an unbelieveable amount. If we put a average 3x multiple, and lets just take the earnings we mentioned earlier, The Corleone empire would be worth around $14 Billion today. But let's say after prohibition, the empire was only generating $7 billion, with $2.1 billion in profit, would make it worth around $6.3 billion today, still an incredible amount. For context here is a list of today's companies that are worth a similar amount. But now, let's go a bit deeper and see how much the don himself is worth. Where would he rank on the Forbes list?_________________________________________________________________
