This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new Chevrolet Tahoe full-size body-on-frame SUV. The Chevrolet Tahoe is part of a whole new fleet of full-size SUVs from GM including the GMC Yukon, Chevrolet Suburban and Cadillac Escalade. What’s new for 2021? It’s all new, where do I start. Chevrolet added a 3L Duramax Turbo Diesel inline-six with a 10-speed automatic transmission. It has 227 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque.
You can also get the standard 5.3L V8 engine with 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque or the 6.2L V8 with 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, which is only offered on the top trim. Although the diesel engine offers the least amount of horsepower, it’s the torque that is terrific. One of the biggest changes for the Tahoe is going from a solid rear axle to an independent rear suspension. This opens up the cabin space for passengers and improves its ride quality. Making this change required that an entirely new chassis be developed for this SUV and allowed the rear floor to be lowered. Chevrolet increased the wheelbase of this new Tahoe by 4.9 inches and the overall length by 6.7 inches. This adds 10.2 cubic feet behind the 3rd row. Many complained that there wasn’t enough cargo space when all rows were in use in the previous model. The Tahoe looks bolder than the outgoing model with slimmer LED headlights and LED accents that wrap around a large centre grille. Our test model RST Diesel has a sporty look to it with a black grille, black accents throughout, 22” high gloss black wheels, black roof mounted side rails, body colour door handles and mirror caps, as well as, deep tinted glass. The new Chevrolet Tahoe is bigger than before. With an extra 3 inches more space in the 2nd row, 10 inches more in the 3rd row and 10.2 cubic feet more cargo space with all three rows of seats in place, you’ll have no problem spreading out.
The new interior feels more upscale with soft materials being used throughout and perforated leather appointed seats in our test model, RST trim. A push/pull button shifter is new replacing the old column shifter. Time will tell how people will feel about this change. This 7-9 passenger Tahoe comes standard with a 10.2” touchscreen and a 4.2” driver display, a Bose 9-speaker sound system, heated leather front seats, 10-way power driver and front passenger seats, driver seat memory and a hands-free power liftgate. Optional features include, an 8” driver display, 10-speaker Bose sound system, a class leading 15” head up display and dual 12.6” tablets for rear seat entertainment area for $2,865 CAD/$2,490 USD.
Wondering how Chevy configures this Tahoe to be a 9-seater? There is an option to put 3 bench seats in each row.
