George Miller has only 11 feature films on his directors resume which becomes all the more remarkable that the movies that he’s made outside of the four Mad Max movies and two Happy Feet have been widely diverse. From the fantasy Witches of Eastwick to the grounded Lorenzo’s Oil. He’s even helmed Babe 2 PIg in the City. Now sandwiched in the middle of his newly revived Mad Max franchise he’s placed a romantic fantasy ode to storytelling 3000 Years of Longing. The movie is based on the novella The Djinn and the Nightingale by A S Byatt about a narratologist who unwittingly unleashes a djinn. It’s hard to be a wish granting being to someone who is well versed in the mechanics of stories involving wishes, there isn’t a single one that isn’t a cautionary tale. That leads to the Djinn telling his tale of longing, his search for love that takes him throughout the years starting with King Solomon and his romance with the Queen of Sheba that goes badly and then Suleiman that…also goes wrong. George Miller has teamed up with some familiar faces like cinematographer John Seale and composer Junkie XL who have worked with Miller before on Lorenzo’s Oil for Seale as well as Fury Road for both Seale and Junkie XL.
