Soon after, new European expeditions sailed to the continent, the Dutch occupied the territories of Surinam and Guyana, and the French occupied the territories of Guiana, which remain French to this day. During the decline of the Iberian Union, the Dutch attempted to invade Brazil, but a well-organized Portuguese army soon drove them from the continent. The Dutch colonies were disputed territories, claimed by the English in addition to the Dutch themselves, and there were disputes over this issue that are reflected in present-day Suriname and Guyana.
