Lightyear is a computer-animated science fiction action-adventure movie made by Pixar Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It is a Toy Story film series spin-off that serves as the origin story for the fictional test pilot/astronaut character who inspired the Buzz Lightyear toy/action figure featured in the main films. It is presented as a blockbuster film within a film that the Toy Story characters would watch. This concept was first introduced in the 2000 direct-to-video film Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins, which also served as the pilot for a spin-off television series, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command.
Angus MacLane co-wrote and directed the film, which stars Chris Evans as the title character's voice, as well as Keke Palmer, Peter Sohn, James Brolin, Taika Waititi, Dal Soules, Uzo Aduba, Mary McDonald-Lewis, Efren Ramirez, and Isiah Whitlock Jr. in supporting roles.
The film recently premiered in the United Kingdom, and is set to be released theatrically in the United States on June 17 2022, in RealD 3D, 4DX, Dolby Cinema, and IMAX formats.
