Watch our documentary on Richard the Lionheart's Crusade:
   • The Third Crusade: Richard the Lionhe...

December, 1192. Richard the Lionheart has just defeated Saladin during the Third Crusade and restored the crusader kingdom on the coast of the Holy Land. Now, as the Lionheart travels back toward his own kingdom, he is attacked in the lands of the Duke of Austria – a man who, supposedly, was Richard’s fellow crusader. The Holy Roman emperor, Heinrich VI, captures King Richard and holds him for ransom. How could this happen? How does this Christian emperor justify imprisoning the Lionheart, the hero of the Third Crusade? Is Heinrich VI a traitor? Or is there another side to the story? Has Richard the Lionheart done something to deserve Heinrich’s ire? Today on Real Crusades History, we’ll explore Richard the Lionheart’s harrowing journey home after the Third Crusade, his imprisonment at the hands of the Holy Roman Emperor, and the struggle of Richard’s friends and allies back in England to free their king.
