Honduras is one of the countries with the highest homicide rate in the world: 90.4 killed per 100,000 inhabitants (source UNODC, 2014). In this small Central American state, there are a hundred times more deaths than in France, twenty-five times more than in the United States. This scourge has a name: Maras. This is what gangs are called here, like Mara Salvatrucha and Mara 18 (the most famous and cruelest gangs) who have made violence their religion.
Organized into criminal networks, modeled on the mafia, these gangs have thousands of members (mareros) who compete for control of drug and arms trafficking and racketeering. A merciless war that affects the entire population.
