I have always wondered whether these 1950s shown in high school scare films worked. They did scare me when I was a kid. But I can't say that it kept me away from marijuana when I was in college. Never got addicted. The people who made this film had very little understanding for what teens were telling each other in the inner cities where marijuana could be bought. I grew up in the suburbs of New York, Levittown, and I remember a boy in my high school in 1959 driving to Harlem to buy a $5 bag and bring it back for his friends and himself. It was a very big deal as no adults seemed to know what teens were doing with it, so no one I know ever got caught. It was before the big surge of marijuana users that took place in the late 1960s. Note the New York accent. These moviemakers felt that a New York accent made the words sound “tougher.”
