Contrary to historical precedent, City of Life and Death, a movie about the Nanking Massacre, survived Communist Party censorship. The Chinese government is slow to approve politically charged movies, but somehow, Lu Chuan managed to produce his incredible film. The Nanking Massacre was one of the most hellish events of the 20th century, a century not lacking in abominable cruelty. Shrugging off Chinese education and propaganda, Chuan shows the massacre in a nuanced way and refuses to morally condemn Japanese civilization as a whole. City of Life and Death is about individuals, the good they're capable of and the evil. It's a remarkable film and one that probably would not receive the green light in today's China.
