Foo Fighters are one of those bands that can effectively get a song in your head and keep it there throughout the rest of your day. When Nirvana ended, Dave Grohl stepped out from behind the drum kit and grabbed his guitar to start writing his own songs.
In 1994 he booked himself into a 24-track studio and formed “Foo Fighters.” In this lesson, I analyze their song, “This is a Call,” showing how Grohl applied a mix of; Modal Interchange, Minor key sound and Blues harmony to create this classic song that ripped to spot #2 on the US Billboard Charts in 1995.
The first thing you realize is that the Verse of this song is coming from a blend of Major and Minor. Its harmonic function is initially dictated by a chugging up-tempo 8th-note rock groove of an “E” Major chord played across four measures. But, the music surprises you with a shift into a “G” Major chord to bring in the color of Minor tonality. This shift happens using “Modal Interchange.”
If you pay attention after the Verse, you’ll get another surprise as the song shifts into the Chorus section. While the chord movement is still in the key of “E” (with the chord changes pushing a “ii-IV-I” progression), the “F# Minor Pentatonic will offer a nice sound. If a “G#” note is included, it can really shine for solos & melody.
In the Bridge section, the opposite side of harmony offers a compensatory sound through a shift into the Rock-Blues vein. This shift happens off of an “E7” chord.
