The cargo ship that caused a Baltimore bridge to collapse into Patapsco River was carrying hazardous materials, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) confirmed Wednesday evening.

NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said there were 56 containers aboard the ship containing hazardous materials, including corrosives, flammables and lithium ion batteries.

Homendy said some containers were breached and that a sheen was identified on the water that would be dealt with by authorities.

The NTSB chair said the voyage data recorder had been recovered and that an investigation into the catastrophe could take 12-24 months.

Homendy added that a preliminary report would be released in two to four weeks.
