After having archived the classic game Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater I knew I could not stop there. I played many Metal Gear games in my youth, but never played them all in succesion to fully get a grip of the epic storyline. And though I played MGS 2, 3 and 4 back in the day, I never played the original.
Though the original PlayStation 1 version has been rereleased not too long ago, I knew I wanted to go for the remake that was released on the Gamecube in the form of The Twin Snakes. This in essence is the entire first game with completely redone cutscenes and some new features like being able to use your weapons in first person.
This version feels closer to the experience of Metal Gear Solid 2 and I was happy that this was my first time seeing this story unfold this way. We play as Solid Snake who infiltrates a base in Alaska known as Shadow Mozes. There he will come face to face with a man known as Liquid Snake and other colorful characters like Revolver Ocelot, Sniper Wolf and Psycho Mantis.
What was really cool is to see the hints of the story regarding Metal Gear Solid 3 since at the time of release, that game had not been made yet. However, the storybits were already laid out. You can compare it to how the Clone Wars is being mentioned in Star Wars Episode 4 before any other Star Wars movie had ever been made.
I thought that MGS1 all in all was awesome with great pacing and a nice atmosphere. Probably my biggest gripe is that it has this annoying artifacting effect during cutscenes when something fast is happening. This was also the case for MGS2 and might have to do with the limited hardware. Other than that its an instant classic and I will continue on my adventures with the one and only Solid Snake!
