Food is a basic human right. Unfortunately, more than 13 million children in America don’t know where their next meal will come from, which significantly impacts their health and academic success. They Never Give Up On Us presents a partnership that is working to change all of that for one Northern California community.

At Leataata Floyd Elementary School in downtown Sacramento, California, 100 percent of its students live below the poverty line. With families making an average of $8,000 per year, healthy meal options are rare or seem out of reach. But the Food Literacy Center, Sacramento Unified School District, and HMC Architects believes that these children deserve more.

The new Food Literacy Center cooking school at Floyd Farms in Sacramento teaches children in low-income elementary schools cooking, nutrition, gardening, and active play to improve their health, environment, and academic success. As the district’s first Zero Net Energy building, it serves as a beacon of hope for a brighter future for students and the surrounding community. The project serves elementary school students and their families, students throughout Sacramento City Unified School District, and community members.
