Under the Lautenberg Amendment, federal law imposes a lifetime ban on gun rights following certain misdemeanor convictions for domestic violence.

Although California law allows one to restore gun rights -- and regain his 2nd Amendment right to bear arms -- after 10 years following a misdemeanor domestic violence conviction, federal law in the Lautenberg Amendment imposes a lifetime restriction on one's right to own, use or possess a firearm. Moreover, where federal and California law conflict on this issue, federal law takes precedent.

In this video, a former Los Angeles county district attorney -- now a criminal defense attorney -- explains the laws.
