Today’s topic of questions is: Foundations out of block, underpinning a house with a new foundation, and baluster spacing for porch railings.

This is a Q&A series dedicated to learning more about building and construction!

Question #1
Ryan via email (foundations)
When it comes to foundation, I see that you guys typically dig a trench for your footing and then build cinder block walls. I know nothing about this yet and have some questions:
1. Are cinder block walls as good, better, or worse than poured foundation walls (in terms of cost, time to build, and performance)?

Question #2
Andy via email
I’m in Ireland, in the process buying an acre of land with an old stone building with no foundation that I’m planning to refurbish myself, I’m not a builder and I’ve been told I’m crazy for doing this...have you ever underpinned an existing stone building, if so how difficult is it?

Question #3
Emeilia via YouTube (pickets)
Aren't you going to notice the different spacing between the pickets across each panel though?

Thanks for watching!
