This shows how this great lens is hobbled by having most of its focusing motion closer than 12", which makes the lens needlessly slow and noisy to focus at normal distances.

After posting, I learned to my relief that much of the annoyance can be eliminated by disabling "Continuous AF" (camera menu page 7) to avoid all the focusing noise when simply setting the camera down or picking it up.
