The Sound of Music is widely regarded by critics and audiences as one of the finest films ever made. For decades, every five years a new and improved home video release of the movie would be produced by 20th Century Fox, from VHS to Blu-ray and other formats, with ever improving quality. Over a decade ago, a 4K master was made from an 8K scan, and this was likely set to be the next release for the 55th anniversary, on Ultra-HD Blu-ray in 2020. However for the first time since the dawn of home video, that 5 year milestone has passed by unmarked. Why? Because Disney bought 20th Century Fox and, as they commonly do when eating up other corporate entities, arbitrarily cancel projects and make other changes, or use content as leverage to sweeten other deals in various moves of corporate synergy. (For instance, The Sound of Music was used as the first Fox title to be on Disney+ when it premiered, in a standard 2K version.) In any case, the decisions Disney makes these days are more about business than they are about art and history, although ironically it could be argued that this is a poor business decision, as the 4K master already exists and there is a built in audience who would buy it without hesitation. Even 4K streaming does not compare to the highest quality available on physical disc, especially with a production such as this, captured on fine 70mm film and scanned from the original negative.
