The Walrus Audio Fundamental Series came out in mid 2023, and the range provides a great way for players to get into the Walrus Audio game in an affordable way. As well as the Fuzz, the series – which kicks off at $99/€99 – also includes Drive, Distortion, Reverb, Delay, Phaser, Tremolo and Chorus pedals. In short, something for every player!

The Fundamental peals all have the same basic layout, with three sound modes per pedal, and three control sliders instead of your more traditional twisty knobs for tonal tweaking. The Fuzz has sliders for Gain, Tone and Volume, and the three fuzz modes are Gate, Classic and Mid+.

Walrus say the Gate mode “lowers bias voltage in the main fuzz section, creating a gated and starved sound”, while the Classic mode is a “screaming fuzz with an iconic mid scoop, give you a compressed and crunchy sound”. Meanwhile, the Mid+ “adds mid boost to flatten out the tone stage, resulting in a compressed but rich and full sound.”

So, what we should have here is one pretty versatile fuzz. And because Walrus also describe the Fuzz as being an aggressive pedal by nature, we can expect some pretty thick, modern fuzz sounds alongside some sputtery, splattery, Velcro-esque gated fuzz goodness – and that’s what I put to the test in the video!

I try the Fuzz in as many different musical genres as I can, from classic 60s rock ‘ripped speaker’ tones to blues, indie, classic rock, garage rock, punk, and even some metal. Oh, and I also kick in my Boss OC-5 Octave Pedal for a few garage rock tones too.

Today, I’m playing the stunning PJD Guitars New Woodford Standard, which is an HHS Strat-style guitar: https://www.pjdguitars.com/product-pa...

My setup was as follows: I ran the Fuzz straight into my Hughes & Kettner Black Spirit 200 head, also using the Boss OC-5 Octave Pedal for the octave tones. Then I went from the amp’s Red Box DI straight into my Focusrite Scarlett 2i4, which went into Logic Pro X. That's it. No post-processing on the sounds was done.
