Matt Reeves recently released the long awaited Joker deleted scene from The Batman where we see Barry Keoghan Joker in all his...glory? Well, not really. For as incredible of an actor as Barry Keoghan is (go watch Calm with Horses, Killing of the Sacred Deer), his Joker might be my least favorite and truthfully speaks to a larger problem I have with how the Joker's been treated by WB and DC since Heath Ledger's once in a lifetime portrayal in The Dark Knight. Most every iteration since The Dark Knight has been an attempt to recapture the magic of that performance, play into the "crazy," faux existentialism that's become grossly maligned with the character. The point of the Joker isn't his sanity, it's what he represents, what he has to say about Batman, Gotham, our culture. Somewhere along the way whether it was Jared Leto's awful Joker or Joaquin Phoenix's Joker, the true essence of the Joker got lost. Barry Keoghan's Joker is just the latest in a long line.
