OBHG Site Director Dr. Samira Tahtawi arrived for her shift to find a laboring patient who had been admitted to the labor and delivery unit the night before.

The patient was a refugee from South America and her husband was translating for her. She was ready to deliver by the time Dr. Tahtawi arrived on her shift.

The patient had begun pushing and had an epidural. After three and a half hours, she was getting tired. Dr. Tahtawi recommended a vacuum delivery and she agreed. The healthy baby was delivered and placed on the patient’s chest to begin bonding.

Shortly after the delivery of the placenta however, the patient had brisk bleeding, more than what was expected at that stage.

Dr. Tahtawi quickly told the nurses to give her medications for the bleeding. When they didn’t have any effect, Dr. Tahtawi had to use an intra-uterine vacuum device.

Watch her story to hear how she provided life-saving care.

Emergencies can happen at any hour. Our OB/GYN hospitalist programs provide around-the-clock care from hospital-based OB/GYN physicians. These highly skilled clinicians do not replace the care patients receive from their regular OB/GYN physicians, instead, they serve as an extension of the patient’s regular doctor.
