When setting up front of house, it is crucial that you have a concise to-do list, to make sure you get everything done in a timely manner. This video, which comes from Berklee Online’s Live Event Sound Engineering and Concert Mixing course by Amanda Davis and David Carroll, shows how important it is to take into consideration your entire process, from load-in to sound check, before any mixing starts. In pure project management terms these types of relationships between components of your work are called “dependencies.” A dependency is a task that cannot be completed until something else has been completed first. If you take the two tasks of “band setup” and “mix the band,” one of these tasks is dependent on the other being completed first. The band set-up task absolutely must be completed before you can mix the band, i.e., the mix the band task is dependent on the band setup task. You need to take these dependent relationships into account when setting up your workflow and the order in which you will complete the tasks.
