1950s American Pedal Car Restoration - Perfect Restoration.
Hello again everybody. I am really happy to be with you in this project.
I am going to restore an American made, Murray brand pedal car. After researching, I have found out that these pedal cars were first made in 1949. And this model is called Commet or Torpedo. So it has two names. I think I am going to call it Commet. Actually Murrat Commet resembles of the name 1952 Buick Super Convertible. The three holes inside the left and right fenders can be found on both Commet and Buick Super. 50’s classical and aesthetic body lines can be seen on this unique car. I started with demoing the car. Paint on the main body was worn off and corrosion has started on some places. After degreasing and cleaning, with the use of paint stripper and sandblasting I got body clean. Thus I could see all the deformations on it. With the use of planishing hammer and anvil, I fixed those. To prepare for painting I used polyester putty, sandpaper, 2k undercoat, sandpaper again and finally painted it with 2k paint. To get a chrome effect, front grill, front and rear bumpers, right and left rocker panels has been painted with grey paint before. And I was able to actualize to nitrate coat those pieces as I thought they were intended to be made that way. That made me achieve an awesome and shiny mirror look. For this procedure, @emrahergn helped me. I want to thank him for the beautiful work he did. If you want to check his channel, you can click on his name. After cleaning, paint stripping and sandblasting the moving metal parts and the chassis of the vehicle, I reparied them. And I sandblasted them, then painted them with oven-drying paint. Body and the chassis pieces were painted with the same color code, ral 3002. But I sanded the surfaces of the wheels and painted them with a Retro beige paint and lastly put glossy varnish on them. I wanted to sand and re-buff the chrome plated pieces but they were too corroded-away, so I couldn’t do that so I undercoated and painted them. Next, like I did on the main body, I silver nitrate coated them and created a mirror shiny finish. There were small cracks on the tyres but they weren’t in bad condition. I degreased and cleaned them. Old seat covers were in unusable condition so I decided to make new ones. Fort his @sanlicraft helped me. We designed an awesome beige-leather seat covers fort he seats. Thanks to @sanlicraft for his help. He posts leather work on his channel, if you want to check him out you can click on the link. I thought I could make some parts for the car that were missing with laser cutting, like plates and dial. To produce these, @leonartatelier helped me. With the equipment he owns, O2 and fiber galvo laser, we produced the parts. Thanks to @leonartatelier for his craftsmanship. I want to say that I am hoping to see laser videos posted as soon as possible from him. I want to bring attention to four more pieces; I bought new bearings for the old bearings, which fitted perfectly. Possibly this was the most important part of this project. Instead of a new system, newly bought, fitting parts were a better choice. I made a piece for the plate, that I could fix before I fix the plate on, because the surface I was going to fix the plate on wasn’t flat. Looking at the pictures in the users manual, I made a instruction paper. And to be known as the person who made all of the work, I fixed a brass sheet in a hidden spot for it to be my signature with the help of camber headed brass bolts. It was a long, but a detailed video. I hope you like it. What is your favorite part in the video? Don’t forget to comment about this. And I need to remind that I read every single comment. Don’t forget to like, if you liked watching the video. I look forward to read your comments. See you in the next project. Take care.
