When it comes to artificial intelligence, the technological end results are only limited by imagination. Perhaps asking a virtual personal assistant to have your self-driving car pick up your kids from school could be the new norm. Fully automated factories could deliver specially designed furniture or even customized medication to your door.
This reality is dependent upon the development of a future intelligent communication edge network that can interconnect billions of end devices that provide services and solutions for the benefit of all.
This is the vision of the new $20M National Science Foundation’s AI Institute for Future Edge Networks and Distributed Intelligence (AI-EDGE) led by Ohio State and partially funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
AI-EDGE will create new AI tools and techniques to ensure communications networks are self-healing and self-optimized. The point is to help solve long-standing distributed challenges – making AI more efficient, interactive, privacy-aware, and secure.
