Ever wonder where people capture those amazing images of wild flocks of flamingos wading around in pink sand and turquoise water? You may very well be looking at Rio Lagartos. It is one of the most spectacular places in the Yucatan peninsula, a paradise for birdwatchers crocodile hunters, and of course, flamingo aficionados !

The mangrove tributaries of Rio Lagartos boast an impressive 400 varieties of bird species, and includes 8 ecosystems from coastal dune to deciduous lowland jungle.

An enormous territory of 60.348 acres was decreed “reserve” in 1999, although since 1976, it was already considered a wildlife refuge.

We took boat tour just before dawn to explore Rio Lagartos (Highly recommended for the best experience) and we had a blast spending 4 hours watching all kinds of different birds, mangroves, watching and photographing flamingos, exfoliating our skin with white clay and finally washing it off in turquoise water on a white sand beach at the end of the tour.

Consider that although you will see flamingoes all year round, the best time to see them is from June to August during their great migration for mating and nesting.

We contacted an excellent professional guide, William, who is also a photographer and biologist so he knew everything about everything throughout the trip.

He also speaks English. You can contact him here:   / williamcantoguide

After the tour we drove our van to find famous pink salt flat lakes, Las Coloradas. And guess what we saw there ??? That’s right ! More flamingos ! Thousands…
