It's a major setback to the #MeToo movement as Harvey Weinstein's conviction was overturned by New York's highest court. This was the first case against the media mogul that triggered the #MeToo movement where women accused men in positions of power of sexual harassment across entertainment, media, politics.

Disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein was convicted in February 2020 and sentenced to 23 years in jail. Ashley Judd was the first actress to go public with allegations against disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein. And the decision to overturn his 2020 sex crimes conviction in a 4-3 verdict, she says, is a betrayal of sexual assault survivors.

The reason the court overturned the verdict is a critical error made by the trial judge by allowing the prosecution to introduce testimony from women who made sexual assault accusations against Weinstein even when they were not part of the charges he faced.

According to the New York court, that was made worse when Weinstein was cross-examined in a way that portrayed him in a highly prejudicial light.

According to the 4-3 verdict of the New York Appeals court, the remedy for this is a new trial.

After his conviction in February 2020, Weinstein has been serving a 23-year prison sentence. He is currently at the Mohawk Correctional Facility in New York state and will not be released after this court decision since he has been convicted in another case. In that he has been handed down a 16-year jail termfor for raping an Italian model and actress in a Beverly Hills hotel in 2013.

Wenstein's lawyers have hailed the Appeals court decision as a win for the legal system...though the legal community is divided.
