Joan Mitchell
60 St. Mark’s Place
Bold Abstract Painter of Emotional Intensity.
Abstract Expressionist painter Joan Mitchell was an active participant in the New York School of artists during the 1950s. Bold in her opinions and language, she moved to New York in 1951 and was included in the legendary “Ninth Street Show” that same year. It was here in her St. Mark’s Place studio that Mitchell would stage a photoshoot of herself painting that was later featured in ArtNews Magazine. Mitchell would go on to stake her territory as a leading painter of the period.
