In the early 1970s, the US Dept. of Transportation attempted design and build the transit bus of the future.

The program, called Transbus, cost $28 million, took 10 years with 9 prototypes to show for it.

The program was fraught with incompetence, poorly-built prototype buses and a dizzying array of adminstrators who all had differing ideas.

Three bus manufacturers took part in the program:
General Motors
ROHR Flxible
American Motors (AM General)
