The words you choose when expressing your feelings are important, and learning how to express love in German is no exception. For romantic love between a spouse or significant other, you’d use the German phrase ich liebe dich which means “I love you.” However if you’re expressing love towards a family member such as a child or sibling or even just a friend, you’d use a variation of this German phrase. Ich have dich lieb translates to “I have love for you,” and it’s what Germans use when they want to express familial or friendly love.

While expressing your feelings is certainly healthy in any language, note that German culture doesn’t encourage a lot of public displays of affection. Hand holding and hugs are usually acceptable, especially among young people, but kissing in public is generally frowned upon in Germany.
