In our latest video on Georges Cameras TV, Nathan compares the Canon RF 15-35mm F/2.8L IS USM and Canon RF 14-35mm F/4L IS USM lenses.

It’s reassuring to know that Canon is paying close attention to the needs of photographers by releasing the Canon RF 14-35mm F/4L IS USM lens. But that begs the question: how does this differ from the hugely popular Canon RF 15-35mm F/2.8L IS USM lens? Both full-frame format lenses have near-identical focal ranges, excellent image quality and performance. Why has Canon delivered a near-identical lens in terms of performance - with the exception of aperture?

The Canon RF 15-35mm F/2.8L IS USM is a stabilized lens released at the end of 2019. It was the final entry in an F/2.8 trio of stabilized lenses for RF mount. The lens joined the incredibly popular Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM lens and the RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM lens to provide a complete zoom kit for Canon EOS R shooters.

The Canon RF 15-35mm F/2.8 is a full-frame format wide-angle zoom with an F/2.8 to F/22 aperture, making it ideal for landscape and astro alike. It features optical image stabilization to deliver 5-stops of anti-shake performance in even the toughest of lighting conditions. The wide zoom ring effortlessly controls the zoom-range transition. The lens barrel features an OIS On/Off switch and a Manual/Autofocus selection switch.

Canon has just announced the all-new Canon RF 14-35mm F/4L IS USM. It also features image stabilization, stunning image quality and represents an excellent wide-angle zoom for enthusiast photographers. Regardless of shooting landscape, astrophotography or video and vlogs, the Canon RF 14-35mm F/4L IS USM is an excellent option.

The Canon RF 14-35mm F/4L IS USM is a superior enthusiast-level wide-angle zoom with an F/4 to F/22 aperture range. Despite not being as fast as the Canon RF 15-35mm F/2.8, the lens performs exceptionally in all lighting conditions. Thanks to the 5.5 stops of anti-shake performance gained from the optical image stabilization, slow shutter speed work is no issue. It features a slightly wider field of view to its older brother. The Canon RF 14-35mm F/4L IS USM also offers optical sharpness throughout the entire range. In fact, at F/4, there is no noticeable difference between the two lenses.

Canon has taken note of the needs of all levels of photographers and videographers. They’ve developed a pair of near-identical lenses that both boast optical brilliance and stunning performance. Yet they serve very different purposes, and what’s more, they acknowledge the budget considerations of photographers. If you’re looking for the best Canon RF wide zoom to match with your Canon EOS R mirrorless camera body, head in-store or online at Georges Cameras.
