Coming up…A tale of two lead singers Sammy Hagar and David Lee Roth. Both fronted Van Halen… Both had different philosophies. WE look at them through two classic song from both eras… Aint Talkin’ Bout Love from the 70s debut and Why Can’t This Be Love from the 80s album 5150. They are both great because the music for each was written by the genius Eddie Van Halen along with the usual offerings by Michael Anthony and Alex Van Halen. The story of both songs along with an interview from Sammy Hagar about the #3 hit is up next.

They both had bushy blonde hair, but that is pretty much where the similarities ended. Their approaches were different. Their styles were different. Even the way they viewed relationships were different. One singer had no interest in a serious relationship, while the other embraced the notion. You’ll see what I mean next including an interview with one of ‘em

The David Lee Roth vs. Sammy Hagar debate will rage on forever. Both singers have their ardent fans, along with their outspoken detractors. It’s a testament to just how passionate Van Halen fans have been- regardless of who performs lead vocals. After years of venomous sparring with Eddie…Dave left Van Halen.
Today we are going to talk about two songs from both singers that helped define each era. Two sides of the coin. so let’s get into it.

It was a headline that shocked the world- especially since the group had just reached the top of the world with the 1984 album.Van Halen being Van Halen without David Lee Roth was unthinkable, but Eddie was determined to find a replacement that would not just fill the vacancy, but actually help the band expand artistically, and commercially- which seemed impossible given the massive success of 1984, not to mention that Dave was one of the most popular rock stars on the planet.

Eddie swung for the fences to replace DLR, offering the gig to singers that were already at the top of the game: Covertly, Eddie had serious, talks with Journey’s Steve Perry, Ozzy Osbourne, Daryl Hall, whom Eddie always admired, Sebastian Bach from the emerging band Skid Row, Eddie offered the gig to Jimmy Barnes, who many other bands pursued after he quit the band Cold Chisel in ’83, and Eddie came very close to working things out with Patty Smyth. The ‘down low' search for DLR’s replacement hit a road block, until Eddie went to an exotic car garage to pick up his Lamborghini. The head mechanic, Claudio Zamapolli, also took care of Sammy Hagar’s Black Ferrari 512.
