Sea ice extent in the Arctic Ocean has declined dramatically over the past decades. Autumn ice advance is slower and occurs later, while summer ice retreat is faster and occurs earlier, with far-reaching consequences for regional and global climate, as well as human and ecological health. The Salinity and Stratification at the Sea Ice Edge (SASSIE) experiment is a NASA campaign that focused on studying the dynamics and impacts of ocean salinity anomalies caused by melting sea ice. In this session Peter Gaube (University of Washington) gave an overview of the project and presented some early results.
