Hand Planes are an amazing asset to a woodworker.. but also a huge hurdle. First you've gotta invest in a good plane, or find a cheap one and (learn how to and then) restore it, then pick a sharpening methodology and get the gear and learn how to sharpen the iron, then learn all the intricacies of properly setting up a hand plane, and then FINALLY you can start learning how to use it. ...and hope you didn't make a mistake somewhere along that path that's compromising the results you want.
