In this video, Statman Dave analyses England’s electric 6-2 win over Iran in their 2022 World Cup opening game. Whilst Southgate set the Three Lions up in a 4-2-3-1, when they had the ball they would transition to a shape resembling a 4-1-4-1 which really helped England to break Iran’s tough 5-4-1 down. We also saw Southgate address the problem that Croatia created at the 2018 World Cup, pressing high and forcing Jordan Pickford to give the ball away.
