We had a toilet that was constantly running and stopping. We could hear water trickling into the tank on and off throughout the night. The fix cost $5.00 and took less than 5 minutes.
The issue is a leaky toilet flapper. The round dome shaped rubber thing that goes up when you press the flush handle. Over time that rubber can become warped and let tiny amounts of water leak into the bowl. After the water leaks out, the float sinks, and water turns on to fill up the tank.
To replace the flapper you simply need to turn off the water, flush the toilet, replace the rubber flapper, then turn the water back on. You can also do it in under 1 minute. Just hold the float with one hand, then replace the flapper with the other.
