Bloodywood. The name in itself brings a sense of irony to not just India’s cliche of Bollywood, but perhaps a mainstream understanding of death metal to the average Indian; gory, bloody and devil worship. The three piece metallers from the capital of New Delhi are anything but that. What started out as a parody project from the bedroom of Karan Katiyar, has now evolved into amongst the most exciting new bands from South Asia in the last couple of years, at a time when guitar music is limping its way back into mainstream consciousness.

Finding success in parodies of popular Bollywood, desi and sometimes chart-topping pop singles, Bloodywood are now over 100-shows old on American, European and SE Asian shores, with a fraction of those numbers in India. Fresh off the success of their debut record, Rakshak, the band are now winding down after a whirlwind 2022-23, dominating stages across festivals outside of India, a new album in the works and finding a sense of rhythm on the back of their unprecedented success.

Upon meeting the three-piece, which morphs into a sextet in its live avatar, the band are undoubtedly desi boys. Their love for leather outfits and ideal BMI percentages; a staple of (most) metalheads, is at par with their love for the dhol and dhoti-clad frontman on stage and butter chicken. The band represents a new wave in the Indian music scene - those who don’t shy away from their Indianness, or look down upon it as being lame. They, however, do not use these elements as cliches or salability factors to Western audiences either, but ask a Bloodywood fan anywhere in the world, and they are into the band for their fun persona, swashbuckling live shows and music that feels right at home.
