After his coalition's heavy defeat in the European elections, Emmanuel Macron on Sunday called for early parliamentary elections that could see the far right lead France's government.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced the dissolution of the Assemblée Nationale and called early parliamentary elections for June 30 and July 7, after having suffered a heavy defeat in the European elections on Sunday, June 10. Marine Le Pen, who's far-right Rassemblement National party came out on top with 31.5% of the votes, welcomed Macron's announcement and said: "We are ready to exercise power."
