VN24 - 02-08-2022 - Bad Sassendorf A44 / Germany - In the night from Monday to Tuesday (August 2, 2022), a serious traffic accident occurred on the freeway A44. One person was life-threateningly injured. According to previous findings, the accident occurred at about 01:09 h. A 78-year-old driver from the Netherlands was traveling eastbound in the direction of Kassel with his truck loaded with fruit and flowers. About one kilometer behind the "Lohner Klei" parking lot, he apparently drove over a tire lying on the roadway and lost control of his tractor-trailer. He went off the road to the right, broke through the crash barrier and drove down a slope, falling onto his right side. A rescue helicopter airlifted the man, who was apparently seriously injured by flying objects in his cab that were not properly secured, to a hospital. There was an acute risk to his life. The truck had to be upright with the help of a special all-terrain crawler crane (Jekko JF990). This allowed the salvage contractor to work from an adjacent field, so the highway did not have to be shut down for the entire duration of the salvage operation. The police estimate the material damage at approximately 22.000,- euro (!)
