In this video we will take a closer look at the clipping mask, compound mask and compound shape tools in Adobe Illustrator. We will use all three of them to make a magazine like visual.

The clipping mask, compound path and compound shape are widely used tools to make advertisements, visuals, etc. Being confident in using them will make your illustrator workflow much more easy and fluent.

Little bit more info on the tools:

A clipping mask is basically an object that masks other objects so they are only visible withing the shape of the clipping mask.

A compound path lets you use an object to punch a hole in another object, and the path acts as a grouped object. The objects of this group are able to be manipulated separately by using the direct selection tool. The underlying objects will be changed by the compound path.

A compound shape lets you combine multiple objects, and has more interactions than a compound path. With the compound shape you can use add, substract, intersect and exclude. The underlying objects will not be changed by the compound shape, as opposed to the compound path. They can still be edited or changed withing the compound shape.

I work with Adobe Creative Cloud on a Windows 10 PC, and added most of the used shortcuts for Windows and Mac in the tutorial.

The editing of the video has been done in Premiere Pro 2020, and I made the intro in After Effects 2020 :)
