One of the most overlooked features in newer DSLRs is the ability to view a real-time histogram when using Live View. In Nikon DSLRs, the way to access this feature is by enabling something called "Exposure Preview" in Live View. Check your camera's user manual to see if you have this feature.

Once you bring up the Live Histogram, you can use it to set your exposure properly. This feature is especially useful for landscape photography when you want to avoid blown highlights.
