The new all electric Volkswagen ID Buzz harks back to the loveable looks of Volkswagen's Type 2 campers from the 1950's & 60's, however, an awful lot has changed since the original Type 2 was launched. The VW ID Buzz is riding the wave of interest in electric cars with its 201bhp electric motor which allows it to manage 0-60mph in a respectable 9.5 seconds. That's quicker than the VW Tiguan 1.5 TSI just to let you know. The Buzz feels quickest at town speeds, where it can pull away from traffic lights and on to roundabouts with surprising gusto. You won't have any issues with outside-lane motorway driving either as it's very happy sitting at the speed limit.
The 77kWh battery pack, located under the floorpan, gives the iDBuzz an official range of up to 260 miles, according to Volkswagen, but you won't get that far in the real world due to many different factors like weather, temperature, type of driving and battery age as an example, but the Buzz Style we tested did manage 236 miles from a full battery.
The ID Buzz is very easy to drive with no gear changes to worry about. This makes it particularly relaxing when crawling along in traffic and around town. The regenerative braking automatically adjusts its strength according to the road layout and traffic when you select its 'B' mode and with a bit of anticipation, it's possible to drive around town hardly using the brake.
With huge expanses of glass and upright pillars, the ID Buzz gives you a view out that a modern SUV could only dream of. Full LED headlights come as standard, while top-spec Style trim introduces matrix alternatives that alter the light’s beam pattern to avoid dazzling other drivers. It has plenty of features as standard too. There's wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay – but it's not the most user-friendly system out there. If you upgrade to the Infotainment Package Plus, you get a 12in touchscreen with some online functionality but the same unintuitive layout. All models have a convenient slot near the indicator stem to charge your phone wirelessly. There are also two USB-C sockets and a total of seven USB-C sockets throughout the car.
The Buzz can charge at up to 175kW which gives a 10-80% top-up in as little as half an hour. A full (0-100%) charge using a regular 11kW home wall box will take around seven hours.
There are only two trim levels, Life and Style. Life comes with a decent amount of equipment, including 19in alloys, adaptive cruise control, climate control, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel. The optional Assistance Package Plus adds blind-spot monitoring and a lane keepy to keep you in the centre of the road on faster roads. Both trim levels come with automatic emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian and cyclist protection, lane-keeping assistance and road-sign recognition.
