At least eight people died and six were missing in South Korea's capital region of Seoul, after record rainfall overnight flooded homes, roads and the city’s transit system.

People were seen wading through thigh-high waters in streets near the Gangnam subway station, one of Seoul’s most bustling business and leisure districts.

"It reminds me of Titanic," said 31-year-old Seoul resident Lim Na-Kyung.

The Yonhap news agency said the downpour in Seoul was the heaviest in 80 years and data showed at least 765 facilities had been damaged.

President Yoon Suk-yeol had called for public employers and private companies to adjust their commuting hours and urged aggressive action in restoring damaged facilities and evacuating people in danger areas to prevent further deaths
