A critique/review/retrospective/analysis of Gothic 3 by Piranha Bytes, the open-world action-adventure-RPG from 2006. Gothic 3 was a huge disappointment when it first launched because of all the bugs and technical issues associated with it being released in an unfinished state, but fortunately fans have continued to support the game over the years with unofficial patches that aim to fix most of the problems to make the game actually playable. However, I still find the game thoroughly underwhelming as both a Gothic game and as its own stand-alone open-world RPG as I find the core design principles fundamentally misguided and unappealing. It's not all bad and there is still some of that original Gothic charm to it, but after playing it three times -- once when it first launched, once a year later with community patches, and once several years after that -- I've found myself liking it less and less, to the point that I'd say I now actually dislike it and consider it my least favorite Piranha Bytes game.
