In the US, Slavs and other immigrants from Eastern Europe were often called "ethnic Whites" who differ from actual white people. Even in Western Europe, stereotypes about Eastern Europeans still abound - from Polish manual labourers and cleaning ladies, to evil gangsters from the Balkans who love kidnapping Liam Neeson's daughter in Hollywood films.
Jacob Mikanowski, author of the book "Goodbye to Eastern Europe: An Intimate History of a Divided Land," breaks it down.
