The Toyota Prado has been Australia’s top-selling large SUV – more than doubling the sales of its nearest competitor, the Toyota Kluger – for longer than the Long Lap has been a Thing.

Sadly, most Prado owners rarely test the off-road credentials for which the ladder-framed ‘Son of LandCruiser’ is so lauded.

The all-new Hyundai Palisade, meantime, arrives based on a car-style monocoque platform that won’t take it anywhere near as deep into the bush, but betters the Prado with eight seats, the option of petrol and diesel power, and lower pricing.

What better time to put the top-shelf diesel all-wheel drive versions of both popular family SUVs head-to-head in the environment most buyers will subject them to?
