I do a lot of off the beaten path kind of stuff. Sometimes I'm miles and miles from civilization. This is the kit I carry when I'm in the field to make sure that even if I get separated from my main pack, I'm able to survive and be found. Now, I know this isn't radio related, but it definitely applies to anyone who's doing SOTA or POTA way out in the middle of nowhere....or anyone who likes to hike in areas that aren't exactly well traveled. The things I include in this kit are things that I feel are important to carry in the field, and are hard to make field expedient versions of. Understand that the more skills and knowledge you have, the less gear you need. As with anything else, having gear is only half the equation. You need to know how to use it as well. Don't wait until you're in a life or death situation to try to figure out how to use a torniquet, or a compass, or a ferrocerium rod. Practice your skills BEFORE you go into the field. A good place to start with your kit is Dave Canterbury's 10 C's. I'd also recommend taking classes from knowledgeable professionals if you really want to become proficient. Having a little gear and the right knowledge might just be the difference between a fun day in the woods, and a funeral. Thanks for watching and 73!
