Craft Contemporary and foreigner take a virtual trip to the twin island cultural powerhouse of Trinidad & Tobago ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡น for ๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—–๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ณ๐˜ โ€“ a live presentation of making what is widely considered the only acoustic instrument invented in the 20th century: the Steel Pan.

Originated in 1930s Trinidad & Tobago (in the shadows of British colonialism), the pan is a pitched percussion instrument, toned chromatically, made from steel drums that were originally derived from oil drums. The steel pan was forged from Carnival culture's reliance on homegrown percussive and melodic rhythm; a rhythm outlawed by colonial forces in an effort to erase African, Indian and Indigenous cultural expression.

The invention and evolution of the steel pan is a story of relentless craft, and we are connecting with Panland โ€“ one of the leading fabricators of the instrument โ€“ to bring this story to the fore.

Tune in, watch the process, be inspired.
